Ilustrado by Miguel Syjuco
“I’m home and safe and filled with the comfort of being somewhere I’ve already been. The ruckus of homecoming is brutally enjoyable and everyone makes me feel like a champion. And all I had to do was stay away long enough.”
His mentor’s body was found. Was it suicide or homicide? He packed his bags and ventured back to his homeland, to know the truth behind his teacher and his unpublished novel, and to once again unfold the political truth in his country.
For a Filipino, you should be proud of Ilustrado. Authored by a Filipino, it also won prizes overseas, and a bestseller abroad. I had a hard time reading this, since I can’t really comprehend well, since the author used deep words. Hence, I can understand the story itself, for in every citizen of his country, he did have a burning desire to save his own country, but on what means? How? And the biggest question is, can you do it on your own?
Aside from the author’s views on politics, the novel also was about love, humor(this novel is full of humor. I love those jokes!), drugs, and friendship.
